After a long winter, many of us have been anxiously waiting to sit outdoors and this week we finally had our chance to welcome spring with open arms. Warmer weather, gentle breezes, the songs of birds, freshly bloomed flowers — it’s no wonder springtime is considered one of the most magical times of the year. Long sunny days are just around the corner and it’s enough to make anyone feel inspired.
This annual shift into spring plays a role in our lives, our routines, our schedules, the places we go, how we feel and destinations we get to see. So why not consider an activity to partake in to welcome this opportunity for a natural fresh start into spring? Here are 9 simple ways to welcome the new season.
Purchase a Bird Feeder
There is always a different type of bird in our neighborhood depending upon their migration patterns. In the spring, the mating season begins and they become all the more melodious in their chirping. So why not put out a welcome mat and enjoy the bird sightings in your yard this spring?
Add Daffodils
There is no better way to welcome spring than to incorporate it right into your home. Perhaps you look forward to having a yard full of tulip and daffodils that will begin to make their way to the surface after a long winter, but maybe you would like a few more. Daffodils and tulips are an inexpensive way to add a little life and colour to your home. Stop by Brechin Foodland and pick up your favourite bouquet as they always have a beautiful variety of spring flowers every season.
Get Outside and Enjoy Nature
Spring always offers amazing landscapes with flowers and returning greenery, and the “coming back to life” feel which can be inspirational for you to get outside and enjoy nature. From the nature around you to the trails right in our own community which are located off of Paradise Road across from Lagoon City Marina & Variety where the trails start off as a short path through a wood patch which leads to a straight and relatively flat path through the wetlands. This trail is great for hiking and mountain biking! You could also get your daily dose of the outdoors and visit the Robert Bowles Nature Centre this spring and feel the benefits from the healing power of nature. Nature is waiting for you at The Robert Bowles Nature Centre as they offer many workshops that may interest you and they are located only a 15 minute drive from Brechin! For more information please visit: robertbowlesnaturecentre.com.
Go Kayaking (or Paddle Boarding)
Once the ice clears out of the canals and the open water is upon us, we are so lucky to have a huge, diverse range of outdoor water activities that become available in our community. The first will be kayaking and paddle boarding which are perfect ways to spend the late spring days and we can’t wait to see our paddlers out on the canals again this season. Don’t forget to paddle safely and wear a lifejacket!
Have a Garage Sale
There’s no better time to discard the unnecessary items that have piled up in your attic, shed, garage and closets. Garage sales are a wonderful way to get rid of some items you no longer need and you can also use it as a chance to network, socialize and meet neighbours living in the community.
Plant Herbs
Spring is also the season to plant and grow herbs. Growing your own herbs not only makes for tastier dishes but they will also look attractive in your home or in your backyard.
Participate in Earth Day
In celebration of Earth Day, the Township of Ramara has launched a month long Community Clean-Up Program by taking action on litter. For the month of April, residents can participate in the clean-up program by registering for a clean-up event on the Township’s website at: www.ramara.ca/earthday. While they encourage residents to use their own reusable gloves, clean-up kits are available which includes one large garbage bag, one large clear bag and a pair of gloves. Earth Day is on Saturday, April 22, 2023 and this year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet.” Visit EarthDay.org for more information and learn how you can make a positive impact on our world.
Watch the Sunrise
If you’re not an early bird, it may become difficult for you to catch a sunrise but you may surprise yourself and realize how wonderful it is to wake up and listen to the songs of the birds while enjoying your favourite morning beverage in your backyard.
