Have you heard that we have a girl that provides services with her truck in our area? You heard right! Forced to re-think her career path and starting her own business to help communities with odd jobs, this Girl & Her Truck has started to make quite a name for herself! Starting out in the Town of Georgina, she has now expanded her services around Lake Simcoe. Congratulations Sharon!
We love to get to know the person behind the dream and we are pleased to introduce you to Sharon Donnelly, the face behind A Girl & Her Truck.
When did you first open your business and has it always been a passion of yours?
Like many, I was forced to rethink my career path due to Covid. I was laid off and even as a bilingual Project Manager of 20 years, I was unable to find a job. Everyone was in my boat, and so it was an employer’s market!
What made you decide to help the community and what areas do you serve?
When I saw a facebook post come up, a lady was looking for some gardening help so I reached out. After spending the day with her, I came to realize, I have always loved gardening since I was a little girl helping my mom, so why not do this instead? Surely there had to be others who needed my help? I started out working in Georgina and as word got out, my services grew to all areas around our great Lake Simcoe, and down into Newmarket, Aurora & Stouffville, East to Brock and Uxbridge and north to Barrie as well as cottagers in the Kawarthas.
What jobs can you help our community with?
Gosh – a bunch! 🙂 The main ones are painting – Interior rooms as well as Front Doors & Garage Doors, Gardens & Property Maintenance – Weeding, Pruning, Hedge Trimming, Planting, Leaves as well as Cleaning. Moving in / out? Or are you getting ready to list your home? I’m your gal!
What do you hope your customers gain from using your service?
I strive to deliver a reliable, affordable, friendly and professional service. I have many repeat customers for all those reasons.
If you were to pick one thing, what would be your favourite part of the business?
I am proud to show my son that his mom, at age 48, is able to start a new career of her own and create something from nothing. Work hard, set goals and you can achieve anything. Only investment was a pair of rainboots, $39!
What is your favourite thing about owing a local business?
It is hard to pick just one! Being a woman in business in a small local community, I hope it inspires and encourages others to do the same.
I like the name of your business. How did you come up with it?
Hehe – well – that’s just what it was – A Girl & Her Truck 🙂
What does Sharon like to do in her free time?
Definitely outdoors as much as I can – fish, hike, kayak, boat. I also tie flies as a hobby and make other crafts. But my number one favourite activity is spending time with my son.
If you had any words of encouragement or advice for someone thinking of opening up their own business to follow their dreams, what would they be?
Grab a notebook and complete a Business Checklist. There are lots of examples on the internet and it will allow you to create goals, tasks & activities, and to set up a successful business.
