Are you interested in massage therapy? A local massage therapist is happy to answer a few of the questions that you may have.  Massage therapy is a wonderful tool that can do so much good for our bodies and souls. Techniques for this treatment are commonly applied with hands, fingers, elbows, and forearms. Massage therapy can be used as a treatment for both acute (recently happened) and chronic conditions such as body stress or pain. RMTs (Registered Massage Therapists) work with a wide variety of patients in the treatment of illness, injury rehabilitation and disability while focusing on the client’s goals.

The Benefits of a Massage

As RMTs, we are very glad our profession is becoming more accepted in the healthcare field. How does this help you? More insurance companies have recognized massage as a viable form of health care, and is now included in most plans, though amounts of coverage can vary. This is great as it allows more people to choose a different form of therapy that doesn’t include medications. It definitely can encourage you to indulge in your self-care on a more regular basis.

Speaking of benefits… There are many different kinds of massage that have their own benefits, and a few of the most common types are:

  • Swedish Massage – the most common type of massage you’ll receive from an RMT. Swedish massage has a relaxing flow while manipulating the soft tissues, which improves circulation and promotes cell growth.
  • Lymphatic Drainage – promotes the circulation of fluids through the body and is extremely beneficial if you recently had surgery or sustained an injury, have edema (swelling) and helps to boost your immune system.
  • Deep Tissue– a popular type of massage for those in sports or who work-out often, but also great for those with scars and deep knots. Not the most comfortable of treatments, but very beneficial to increase your range of motion post injury and alleviate scar discomfort.
  • Prenatal (Pregnancy) – During the months of pregnancy, your body goes through many changes. Prenatal massage can have many benefits through each trimester, though they’re not all the same. Always check with your MD before receiving a massage, especially if used in conjunction with Aromatherapy treatments.

There are many other types of massage, and different variations of each of them. Massage doesn’t need to be on a massage table, face down. There are many types of modifications to ensure everyone can receive the care they need. Massage Therapists can treat on massage tables, chairs, benches, beds, etc. Some clients aren’t able to get out of bed due to injuries, aging and body changes. RMTs can adjust treatments to ensure circulation of fluids happen, to avoid issues such as bed sores.

The Treatment Plan

Has any of this spiked your interest yet? Maybe you’re wondering, “what should I expect at my first appointment?” Great question!  Whether you are being treated in a clinic or if you are working with a mobile therapist, on or before the first visit, you will complete a confidential health history as part of your assessment. Your RMT will assess your individual needs as well as other factors that may be contributing to your injury or condition. Following that, they will develop a treatment plan with you to ensure you receive appropriate treatment. The treatment plan can be changed at any time and will be reassessed at an appropriate time, such as when we might expect the swelling to have decreased and range of motion to normalize.

You have no obligation to undergo any part of a treatment. This is very important. If you book an appointment and once you arrive and see the space, meet the therapist and you feel uncomfortable, you do NOT have to proceed with treatment. You should always feel safe and your treatment should not begin until you have given your informed consent. This involves setting realistic goals for treatment, discussing possible responses to treatment, and being informed of alternative care options, like seeing a Physiotherapist or Chiropractor for example. Your RMT might also suggest a stretch and/or an exercise to help with your main problem areas.

Last but not least, let’s talk water.  You must always make sure you have a large glass of water after a massage. During treatment, many fluids are moved throughout your body and even though the RMT is doing the work, your muscles are getting a workout. Water is needed to repair the tissues and water promotes fresh blood flow. My final piece of advice is to enjoy a nice hot bath with Epsom salts or shower afterwards, to even further relax your muscles.
