Are you aware that a small carpentry business has grown into a business that is so much more than carpentry and they are located right here in Brechin? Specializing in adaptive living, Savage Carpentry strives to enhance not only the experience their clients have with them, but also the experience clients have living in their homes.
Whether you are wanting a new washroom with a curb-less shower, main floor renovation or an open concept kitchen, Savage Carpentry can make your home renovation dream a reality. We love to get to know the person behind the dream and we are pleased to introduce you to Richard Savage in our Community Spotlight.
When did you move to Brechin and what attracted you to live here?
My family and I moved to Brechin 3 years ago. Both my wife and I grew up in small towns by the water so Brechin felt like home almost immediately. It has also been a great place to raise our kids.
When was Savage Carpentry first established and can you give us a little bit of the history behind your general contracting company?
I registered the business in 2012 along with obtaining WSIB and liability insurance. It was a side hustle for a few years as I was hesitant to leave a steady pay check. In 2016 I went all in, left the steady pay check, and have been running the business ever since.
What made you go into business for yourself? Was it always a passion of yours?
I ultimately got into business for myself to create the freedom that would allow me to spend more time with my family. I also love meeting new people and helping them improve their homes.
If you had to name one favourite project you have worked on, what would it be and why?
Last summer we got invited out by a larger contractor to help work along side their engineer to create a new floor system for a log home that we helped move onto a new foundation. It was extremely unique and I may not get another project like it again in my career.
What geographical areas does Savage Carpentry service?
We service Muskoka to Clarington.
What is your favourite thing about owning a local business?
I love small towns and like that the owners of local businesses also live in the community. I’m proud to own a business in a small town and my family and I love supporting all the great small businesses our community has to offer.
What does Richard like to do in his free time?
Spend time with my family, whether at the local beaches, at the soccer field, or exploring new parks/trails.
If you had any words of encouragement or advice for someone thinking of opening up their own business to follow their dreams, what would they be?
I would highly recommend talking with other business owners. So many people just don’t know where to start. I’m always more than willing to share the hurdles I have overcome. There is also a ton of resources out there.
