Lagoon City Life discovered Huckleberry Farm last summer and fell in love with their sunflower farm instantly.  From growing beautiful sunflowers, fresh vegetables and being greeted by such caring individuals, Huckleberry Farm is definitely a must stop as you drive along Highway 12 just north of Brechin (at Sideroad 15) which is open from the end of July until early September.  We are thrilled to introduce you to Anne Marie and Andrew in our Community Spotlight, the owners of Huckleberry Farm .

When did Huckleberry Farm first open and can you give us a little bit of the history behind Huckleberry Farm?

Huckleberry Farm opened in the summer of 2020. We purchased the property 5 years ago because we loved the land.  Two beautiful 20 acre farm fields (one is situated on Sideroad 15) and 40 acres of trees and bush through the center which is 89 acres in total.

Is this your first time owning a local business and if so, was it always a dream of yours?

We sold our natural skincare business based in Orillia in January of 2020 which allowed us to have more time to enjoy this property.  We live in Beaverton and we had two local businesses in town for many years.   We love the outdoors and nature and wanted a place we could enjoy ourselves, but also to share with others.

Why did you choose a sunflower farm and what do you hope people gain from stopping by your farm?

The pandemic has challenged so many us and it has been a wonderful feeling to have a place people could come for a walk, a chat and hopefully a smile.  I owned a flower shop for 15 years in Beaverton and sunflowers felt like a fun way to connect with nature for me, and Andrew has always enjoyed the outdoors- animals, farming, landscaping, woodworking, etc.

Huckleberry Farm is a unique name. Where did it originate from?

The name Huckleberry is Andrew’s nickname for me.

What is your favourite thing about owing a local business?

We have always enjoyed having local businesses.  We are huge promoters of small business and would support and share our experiences with anyone interested in starting their own business.  Having a local business also allows us to meet many people within our community and learn about what they are doing so we can all share ideas and thrive together.

What does Anne Marie and Andrew like to do in their free time?

Free time…mmmm, not sure what you mean? Lol  We are always busy with projects at home, improving the farm and spending time with family.

If you had any words of encouragement or advice for someone thinking of opening up their own business to follow their dreams, what would they be?

We have volunteered at local schools to speak to high school students about starting their own business and sharing our experience. We encourage it, but with a plan!! Don’t go in blind and do your research.

We can’t wait to see what Huckleberry Farm will continue to show us in the future as we look forward to visiting their farm every year.
